Poor directional stability

E39

Situation: 

A number of E39 customers have complained about the directional stability of their
vehicles. When such complaints are received, you must make a clear distinction between
two different complaints:

A) "Fidgety" directional stability:

Customer complains of e.g.:
"nervous handling"
"car floats at high speed"
"fidgety steering"
"car pulls to one side when in grooves in the road caused by wear"

B) Car pulling to one side:

Customer complains of e.g.:
"car pulls to one side"
"car pulls constantly to the right"
"car pulls to one side on cambered roads"

Important: 
Most roads are cambered to the right and therefore the most frequent complaint is that the
car constantly pulls to the right even though it would also pull to the left if driven on a road
cambered to the left (vice versa in countries in which you drive on the left).

Affected
vehicles:

E39, all models

Procedure:

1. 

By asking the customer to give a precise and detailed description of the complaint and
then taking the vehicle for a long test drive, find out first whether you are dealing with
complaint A) or B).

2. 

Check the condition and inflation pressure of the tyres and correct the pressures if
necessary (if necessary, fit  master reference wheels and take the vehicle for a test
drive).

3. 

Check the height levels according to the suspension data and adjust if necessary.

4. 

If actions 1. to 3. have not solved the problem, use the KDS (Kinematic Diagnosis
System) to measure the suspension alignment data and adjust the settings
appropriately depending on the complaint:

A) "Fidgety" directional stability:

Front axle:

Set overall toe-in to lower tolerance:

6-cylinder: - 4' +  1' (toe-out)

8-cylinder: + 3' +  1'

-

Rear axle:

Set toe-in and camber (king pin angle) left and right to lower tolerance:

All Models: 

Overall toe-in = + 5' +  1'
