Seat occupancy identification
E39
Situation:
After ignition "ON" the airbag warning lamp lights up for 2 minutes. The fault "25 Seat
occupancy identification; Short-circuit in the seat occupancy identification system" is
stored in the fault memory.
The sensor mat for the seat occupancy identification system (Ger. abbrev. SBE) is to blame
in this instance. When the front passenger seat is occupied, the resistance of the sensor
mat is below the prescribed tolerance value.
There is no risk of the airbag not inflating in the event of a serious frontal collision. What
happens with this fault is that the airbag is no longer released selectively, i.e. it is also
released when the front passenger seat is unoccupied.
Affected
vehicles:
E39 with "velours seats"
Period of manufacture: from the start of series production through to 28.09.95
Action:
In the event of this complaint arising, the sensor mat for the seat occupancy identification
system (in the front passenger seat) should be renewed.
Note:
The fault only arises sporadically. As a result, merely deleting the fault stored in the
fault memory of the airbag control unit does nothing to alleviate the problem.
Procedure:
-
Switch the ignition off
-
Unfasten the plug connection on the seat occupancy identification system control unit
-
Remove the front passenger seat
-
Remove the seat cushion cover
-
Renew the sensor mat
-
Replace the seat cover on the seat cushion
-
Refit the front passenger seat
-
Connect the seat occupancy recognition system control unit up to the connecting lead
Once the system has been refitted, delete any fault which may be stored in the airbag
control unit using the diagnostic programme.
Detailed instructions on how to dismantle the seat and renew the sensor mat are contained
in the Repair Instructions.
Please refer to Repair Instructions 52 17 400
General:
It is imperative that all the relevant safety precautions are observed when carrying out
repairs to the airbag system. These can be found in Repair Instructions 32/34. It is
especially important to make sure that the battery has been disconnected or terminal
R has been switched off before disconnecting or reconnecting the airbag control unit.
