Noise from the steering

E39 M51, M52

Complaint: 

Grating/grinding noise when turning the steering wheel with the vehicle stationary or when
manoeuvring.

Rattling noises when driving over uneven road surfaces.

Cause: 

Rack and pinion power steering unit: insufficient lubrication on the reverse of the rack.

Vehicles affected:

E39/M51, M52
Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to February 1998

Remedy: 

Production measure: 
A modified steering gear is being fitted in series production since 
February 1998.

Service measure: 
First verify the customer's complaint and ensure that the noise is actually coming from the
steering gear.

Inspection conditions:

Run the engine

Steering gear operating temperature approx. 50

°

 C

Grating/grinding:

Place the vehicle over a pit or onto a four-pillar workshop hoist (the wheels must be
loaded).

Move the steering wheel as described in the complaint and listen at the steering gear.

Rattling:

Place the vehicle over a pit or onto a four-pillar workshop hoist (the wheels must be
loaded).

Turn the steering wheel to the centre position.

Rapidly move the steering wheel back and forth by approximately a hand's width at
the circumference and listen at the steering gear.

If the noise is clearly coming from the steering gear, treat the reverse of the rack with BMW
Teflon spray following the procedure described below.

This complaint does not justify an exchange of the steering gear and as such cannot be
reimbursed through warranty/goodwill settlement.

Note:

Please proceed exactly as described in the work instructions!

Steering temperature at least 20

°

 C.

No particles of dust or dirt may get onto the rack or into the bellows while the bellows are
removed.

Attention!

When removing the bellows, ensure that the reverse of the rack is not touched by
hands, cloth etc.
