Wind noise from front doors
E39
Complaint:
Whistling noises from the direction of the front doors at speeds of approx.
170 km/h and above. The problem crops up suddenly.
Cause:
Insufficient tension in the door weatherstrip at the A-pillar.
Affected
vehicles:
E39
Period of manufacture: from the beginning of series production through to week 15/96
Remedy:
In the event of this complaint arising, a modified door weatherstrip with increased Shore
hardness can be retrofitted.
Note:
The improved door weatherstrip has been fitted in series production since week 16/96
Procedure:
-
A test drive should be carried out to locate the precise source of the wind noise.
The whistling noise alters as the window frame is pushed in or out.
-
The weatherstrips on the front doors should only be replaced if the noise
characteristics change during the test drive.
