Knocking noises when auxiliary heater is operating
E38/M57, M67
E39 / M47, M57
Complaint:
When auxiliary heater is in operation, a loud, regular knocking noise can be heard from the
area of the left-hand front seat.
Cause:
Transmitted noise from the fuel metering pump for the auxiliary heater into the vehicle
interior.
Affected
vehicles:
E38 with M57 or M67 engine
E39 with M47 or M57 engine
manufacturing period: from start of series production to September 2000.
Remedy:
In case of customer complaint, replace the bracket and the rear fuel line on the underbody.
Procedure:
1.
Remove the fuel metering pump (1) with the rear fuel line (2), please refer to Repair
Instructions 64 12 600, and seal the connections.
Open the fuel filter bracket (3). Unclip the fuel lines and tie back to the left.
2.
Remove the hoses secured to both sides of the removed fuel metering pump. Then
remove all attached parts (adapter ring, clamp) from the fuel metering pump.
3.
Cut out the fuel metering pump bracket (1) and remove the underseal in the area of
the bracket.
