Navigation system Mk1: Fault analysis guide

E38, E39

Situation: 

This fault analysis guide summarises the known complaints of the navigation system Mk1
(introduction into series production until August 1997) and the corresponding remedial
measures.

The objective is to prevent unnecessary time being used for fault elimination and for the
exchange of components.

Action:

The condition for correctly working through the fault analysis guide is an exact description
of the customer's complaint. In case of uncertainty it is therefore better for a diagnostic
technician to contact the customer directly. Complaints and their causes and rectification
measures are given in Enclosures 1 to 22. The fringe conditions, which must always be
clarified, can be found in Enclosures 23 to 25.

In all cases of complaints which cannot be rectified with this fault analysis guide, our advice
is to take up direct contact with the technical advisor at your subsidiary or importer.

Procedure:

Location determination

Enclosure 1 
The location cursor is located off the road on which the vehicle is travelling, usually by a
distance of several kilometres. This primarily occurs immediately after "Ignition ON".

Enclosure 2 
The location cursor gradually moves away from the road. As this happens, messages may
be given, for example: "You are leaving the recorded road network, please turn around".

Enclosure 3 
The location cursor is located at a different position along the road. In such cases, the
remaining distances given to junction are also inaccurate. This is frequently observed after
long straight stretches without a significant change of direction.

Enclosure 4 
Reverse travel not recognised. The location cursor then "drives" forwards and turns corners
in the wrong direction. This in turn causes a malfunction in map matching", i.e. the location
cursor moves on adjacent roads.

Enclosure 5 
The location cursor "jumps" to an adjacent parallel road. Under certain circumstances,
instructions may be given, for example: "If possible, please turn around", "Turn left/right".

Enclosure 6 
The location cursor remains stationary. The display "freezes". Pressing the rotary push
button or the "Menu" button does not effect a change.

Route planning

Enclosure 7 
The route to an entered destination is not planned all the way through on the roads that
would be expected from the selected route criteria.
