Loading Operating Software

E38, E39 with Navigation 

Situation: 

The operating system for the video module and for the navigation computer has been
revised. The operating software in the navigation computer and in the video module can be
updated by means of the CD-ROM drive of the navigation computer.

Important:

It is absolutely essential that the "CD Software V 6.1" operating software be loaded,
otherwise the latest map CD available from June '96 will not be able to be used. 

You will receive further information concerned with the distribution of the map CD
at some point during the next weeks.

The new operating system includes changes in the operating 
sequences of the navigation system. These changes are summarized in the
enclosure. The customer must be supplied with a copy of this 
enclosure. The enclosure is also available as a separate print (see Parts). 

The operating software CD is for workshop use only and must not be given to
customers. Every dealer has been supplied with an operating software CD by parts
sales department. 

Affected
vehicles:

E38, E39 with Navigation (special equipment 609)
Manufacturing period: from start of series production up to and including week 18/96

Procedure:

To update the operating software in the navigation computer and in the video module,
proceed as follows:

1. 

Turn the ignition key to terminal R (ignition key position 1) and wait until the navigation
system is ready for operation. Do not perform diagnosis while installing the new
software. Make sure that the power supply is stable, i.e. do not switch on any electrical
loads.

2. 

Remove the map CD from the navigation computer. 

Note:
It may be the case in some vehicles that the CD sticks in the drive when ejected, due
to a piece of plastic "swarf" on the CD. You can release the CD by knocking lightly
on the front panel; it will then be ejected. 

3. 

Insert the CD Software V 6.1 into the navigation computer.

4. 

After a few seconds, the screen of the on-board monitor will display a symbol which is
"filled in" clockwise in colour. 

Note:
If that symbol does not appear after you have inserted the CD Software, the latest
operating software has already been loaded in the navigation computer and video
module. 

Once loading has been completed, the message "Software has been loaded." is
displayed.

5. 

Now, remove the CD Software first of all and then confirm completion of loading by
pressing the rotary pushbutton on the on-board monitor. "O.K." will be displayed.

6. 

Reinsert the map CD into the navigation computer.
