Wind noise windscreen
E39
Complaint:
1.
A roaring noise from the direction of the windscreen at approx.
60-80 km/h and above
2.
Soft whistling noises coming from the direction of the windscreen at approx. 130 km/h
and above
Cause:
Re complaint 1:
The sealing lip round the windscreen frame does not have adequate contact with the outer
roof skin over its entire length
Re complaint 2:
Air blows through the perforated windscreen frame at the right-hand A-pillar
Remedy:
Re complaint 1:
Depending on how the windscreen has been fitted, either the windscreen frame should be
renewed or the windscreen rebonded.
Re complaint 2:
The slots in the windscreen frame strip at the bottom of the right-hand A-pillar should be
sealed with terostat.
Procedure:
Re complaint 1:
-
Carry out a test drive to locate the source of the wind noise.
The top edge of the windscreen frame should be masked with adhesive tape over its
whole width and a new test drive carried out. The following work should only be carried
out if this measure has reduced the level of wind noise.
-
Remove the windscreen frame
-
Measure length A (=the height of the screen above the adhesive flange) in three
places along the top of the windscreen with a slide gauge. The measuring points
should be length E from the mid-point of the windscreen (refer to figure 1, the points to
be measured are indicated by the arrows on the roof frame)
-
Measure length B (= gap between the top edge of the windscreen and the edge of the
roof) in the same positions as above. This is done by laying the measuring tape on the
glass and measuring the distance to the metal (refer to figure 1)
-
Fit a new windscreen frame if
length A is less than 11.0 mm and
length B less than 8.0 mm
in all three places.
Do not apply lubricant when fitting the windscreen frame.
Note on simplifying installation:
Before fitting the new windscreen frame, the thin rubber strip should be removed from
its plinth (arrowed next to the adhesive strip in figure 1). The plinth should also be
shortened by length D over a length of approx. 100 mm starting in the top corner (refer
to. figure 1)
-
Remove the windscreen and refit it together with a new windscreen frame if
