Ambient temperature gauge shows incorrect reading

E39 / M5

Complaint:

The reading on the ambient temperature gauge increases with increasing engine
temperature.

Cause:

Waste engine heat reaches the ambient temperature sensor and thus increases the actual
ambient temperature reading.

Affected
vehicles:

E39 M5 
Manufacturing period: start of series production until May 2000.

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, replace the "lower right engine compartment cover" (please
refer to Figure 1).

Only install modified parts with the index "F" (or higher). The index can be found next to the
