Loud noise generated from auxiliary electric fan
E39
Complaint:
At low speeds or when the vehicle is stationary, a howling or droning noise from the
auxiliary electric fan (pusher fan) can intermittently be heard inside the vehicle. This is
especially noticeable when the speed changes in the lower speed range of the auxiliary
electric fan.
The characteristic of this complaint differs clearly from the regular running noise of the
auxiliary electric fan.
Cause:
Due to tolerances, an unfavorable connection of the auxiliary electric fan can result in the
noise of the fan motor being transmitted through the bodyshell and into the interior.
Affected
vehicles:
E39 with spark-ignition engine
Manufacturing period: January 2001 to November 2001
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, check whether the complaint can be reproduced and
whether the noise level generated is clearly greater than that of a comparison vehicle.
If the howling/droning noise inside the vehicle can be reproduced when the speed of the
auxiliary electric fan is changed, proceed as follows:
1.
Check the BMW part number of the fan shroud.
The part number can be read off with the help of a hand lamp without additional
disassembly work. To do this, look at the shroud though the right-hand section of the
cooling air entry grille (see illustration). The BMW part number stamped next to the
BMW logo or it is printed on a label next to the BMW logo.
2.
If the part number is 64 54 6 921 395:
Replace the auxiliary electric fan and install a pusher fan with part number 64 54 6 921
946. Please refer to repair instructions "Removing and installing / replacing complete
auxiliary fan", RA 17 40 000.
