5 Series E39 M5 (S62) SAL
Unfasten nut.
Press track rod off pitman arm with special tool 32 1 190.
Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tapered spigot and bore both free of grease.
Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening Torque,
refer to Technical Data 32 21 3AZ.
Remove pitman arm,
refer to 32 21 501.
Unscrew screw.
Slide universal joint off steering gear.
Installation:
Screw must locate in retaining groove of steering unit.
Tightening Torque,
refer to Technical Data 32 31 1AZ.
Installation:
Ensure that steering wheel and steering gear are in straight-
ahead setting.
Determine center position of steering gear by halving the total
deviation and aligning on marks.
Remove steering gear from front axle support and, if necessary,
separate plug connection to Servotronic unit.
Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Draw in steering gear on screw (1) until it abuts the front axle
support and only tighten hand-tight.
First tighten screw (2) and then screw (1).
Tightening Torque,
refer to Technical Data 32 00 1AZ.
