FASTA

General information

What is FASTA?

The name "FASTA" is derived from the German for Vehicle operating and service data transfer and analysis. This
system provides an infrastructure for gathering, circulating and analysing vehicle data from the field. Data is read off
from a vehicle with the diagnostic tester and transferred via internet or extranet to a central server within BMW AG.
There it is fed by the different users in the development and service departments into evaluation programs.

The main focus of FASTA is to speed up the fault rectification process and ongoing quality control.

How does FASTA work?

For FASTA to work, testers must be networked and data transfer must be activated. These conditions must also be
met for future applications such as online updates (please refer to IDC 028/001-005).

FASTA data are read off when diagnosis is performed on a vehicle using the BMW diagnostic systems DISplus or
Group Tester One (from 2002). The data is read off during vehicle identification. The scopes read off are managed
by the respective CD according to model series. When this is done, identification data, the fault memory and any
special data stored in the control unit are read.

Data may then be read off in a subsequent manual readoff section, for which the vehicle needs to be set to certain
operating modes (e.g. idling, radio on).

After ending diagnosis, the data read off is sent to a central server within BMW AG.

What is meant by special readoff?

Usually, FASTA data are only read off as described above at the beginning of an already planned diagnosis session.

Under certain circumstances (series launch of new model series or engines, problems with certain control units, etc.),
a so-called special readoff may be performed.

During a special readoff, a diagnosis session is performed, regardless of its necessity, thus enabling FASTA data to
be recorded. Special correspondence and TIS will provide information about special readoff actions and how they
can be reimbursed (please refer to IDC 029/001-005).
