Removing and installing/replacing nitrogen
oxide sensor (N53)

Special tools required:

11 4 260

Warning!

Scalding hazard!

Only perform these tasks after the exhaust system has cooled
down. 

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove rear reinforcement (E93 only).

Remove rear cross-member (E60/E61).

Remove rear underbody protection (except E60).

Release rear heat shield and slide towards front.

Installation:

If a nitrogen oxide sensor is reused, only apply a thin and uniform
coat of Never Seez Compound (refer to BMW Parts Service)
to thread.

The nitrogen oxide sensor which projects into the exhaust system
branch (sensor ceramic) must not be cleaned and must not come
into contact with lubricant.
