Convertible top malfunction at low temperatures

Complaint:

After lengthy periods out of use and at low outside temperatures (under 0 

°

C), the

convertible top does not fold completely into the soft-top compartment.

Cause:

As the convertible top is folded away, the link cluster in the convertible top linkage (in the
area of the main pillar/main link/rear roof link) reaches a design-conditioned dead point.

Especially at low outside temperatures, the convertible top may not be able to move beyond
this dead point.

Affected vehicles:

E64
manufacturing period: August 2004 until February 2005

Remedy:

In case of customer complaint, adhesive felt strips must be applied to the convertible top
linkage (in the area of the main pillar/main link/rear roof link) on the left and right to effect a
shift in the position of the dead point.

Procedure: 

Preparing the adhesive felt strips and
attaching to convertible top linkage

Cut the 30 x 40 mm (1) adhesive felt
strip to create two halves of
15 x 40 mm.

Peel off the protective film from one half
of the felt and stick to the second half to
form a single piece of felt (1).

Repeat this procedure to prepare a
second piece of felt (1).
