Unstable air recirculation

E38 with IHKR and tropical version

Complaint: 

The air recirculation mode is no longer active after the engine has been restarted, even if
the relevant LED may light up. 

Cause: 

A software fault in the IHKR control unit may cause the above fault to arise sporadically. 

Affected
vehicles:

Manufacturing period: from the start of series production up to 05.07.1995.
E38 with IHKR and tropical version (national version 823). 

Remedy: 

In the event of this complaint arising, the system should be recoded in line with the ECE
version. For this purpose the air recirculation function is altered from "storage ON" to
"storage OFF". 

Description of the functions "storage ON/OFF":

The "storage ON" function ensures that the air recirculation facility remains active without
having to be switched on again every time someone leaves the vehicle and the engine is
restarted.
In the case of the "storage OFF" function, the air recirculation function which was previously
set is deactivated again 16 minutes after "ignition OFF". In this instance the air recirculation
facility has to be activated by pressing the relevant button after the car has been restarted.

Since 06.07.95 the air recirculation mode has always been coded "storage OFF" in
production.

Encoding programme ZCS V 14.0 (or a later version of the same programme) can be used
for recoding purposes.

Procedure:

Please adopt the following procedure when converting vehicles:

Connect the MoDiC or DIS to the vehicle

-

Ignition ON

-

Select "Encoding ZCS"

-

Select "5 - E38 series"

-

Select "4 - Conversion"

-

Select "4 - IHKA"

-

Select "3 - Air recirculation"

-

The current function status is displayed: "Storage ON"

-

"Change ? Y/N" confirm with "Y"

-

Select "2 - Do not store air recirculation"

-

"Start automatic encoding ? Y/N" confirm

-

Disconnect the control unit or battery for at least 10 seconds and then reconnect.

The Central Encoding Key is automatically changed by the programme during the recoding
procedure. A new encoding label should be printed out and attached next to the previous
label. The old label should be rendered invalid by crossing it out.

It is not possible to reverse this recoding procedure on the IHKR.
