2-stage articulated washer - functional description / diagnosis aid

330d, 525d, 530d, 730d, 740d

Situation:

On the vehicles listed below, a 2-stage articulated washer has been fitted at the junction
"transmission output flange/propeller shaft" since the start of series production.

An increasing number of articulated washers have been submitted through warranty, on
which no fault could be found.

vehicles:

E46/330d manual transmission 
E39/525d, 530d manual transmission 
E38/730dA, 740dA

Functional 
description:

Functional description of 2-stage articulated washer:

Damping stage 1: 
The articulated washer has 6 radially positioned elastic rubber predampers (please refer to
Fig. 1, item 4). These dampen high-frequency, low-amplitude vibrations when pulling in the
part-load range. Stage 1 is configured for a propeller shaft torque of up to 250 Nm.

Damping stage 2: 
From 250 Nm upwards, the buffer discs on the segments of the outer bushes make contact
(please refer to Fig. 1, items 1a, 1c). 
From this moment on, torque is transmitted exclusively through the cord thread in the
vulcanised rubber body (please refer to Fig. 1 item 5).
