Leak at top timing case cover

M60

Complaint: 

An oil leak from the top timing case cover (cylinder bank 1-4 and/or cylinder bank 5-8)

Cause: 

The PU strip does not slide sufficiently on the gasket

Affected
vehicles:

E31, E32, E34 and E38 with M60
Period of manufacture: from the start of series production through to November 1995

Remedy: 

Fit a new gasket which has been coated on one side with lubricating varnish (similar to the
version used on the M73)

Procedure:

In the event of this complaint arising, the strip seals on affected timing cases (cylinders 1-
4 or cylinders 5-8) should be renewed in accordance with the Repair Instructions.

Please refer to the E38 Repair Instructions (Job number 11 14 080/085)

Important:

It is essential that you tighten the bolts in the correct sequence as well as to the
correct tightening torque when carrying out the repair.

The previous system of fitting an identical set of sealing strips on cylinder banks 1-4 and 5-
8 the opposite way up to each other has been discontinued. Instead a separate set of seals
is now available for each bank of cylinders. This ensures that the strip of PU which is
applied to just one side of the gasket is always on the timing case cover side, and that the
side of the gasket coated with lubricating varnish is on the cylinder head side (refer to
figure).
