Complaint:
After braking over a longer distance and then standing still, e.g. at traffic lights, the brake
pedal may briefly stick in the depressed position; i.e. the brakes are not released. When
this fault occurs, a very loud sucking and banging noise can be heard.
Cause:
Second atmosphere valve sticks briefly.
Affected
vehicles:
E38 and E39
Manufacturing period: from start of series production to March 1997
Remedy:
Measure taken in series production:
A modified brake servo has been fitted as standard since March 1997.
Service action:
If you receive a complaint from a customer, retrofit a special oil ring to the brake servo. Do
not exchange the brake servo in such cases!
Procedure:
-
Remove the trim panels in the footwell on the driver's side.
-
Pull the bellows (1) of the brake servo off towards the brake pedal.
