Knocking noise from IHKR
E38
Complaint:
It is possible that knocking noises may be heard coming from the direction of the fresh
air/air recirculation flap adjustment motor at speeds of up to
80 km/h.
Cause:
-
Weaknesses in the material used for the intermediate cog (fresh air/air recirculation
flap)

The brass cog of the adjustment motor and the intermediate cog have insufficient
working depth
-
The brass cog does not mesh properly with the intermediate cog for the fresh air/air
recirculation adjustment motor
Affected
vehicles:
All E38 with IHKR
Period of manufacture: from the start of series production up to week 44/95
Remedy:
In the event of this complaint arising, the intermediate cog (2) should be replaced (refer to
figure S64 95 009, page 2).
Procedure:
Remove the fresh air/air recirculation
flap adjustment motor (1) (to be found
on the left-hand side of the air
conditioning unit
Replace the black intermediate cog (2).
The replacement cog looks somewhat
different to the original, but can be
fitted. It has been redesigned to
improve the bearing method with the air
conditioning unit.
