Xenon light does not switch on

E38, E39  with xenon light (option 522)

Complaint:

One or both xenon headlights do not switch on, even though the light switch is in the
"dipped headlights on" position and the ignition is switched on or the engine running. 

The affected headlights can only be switched on by turning the light switch to "0" and back
to "dipped headlights on" after waiting for at least two seconds.

Cause:

No ignition impulse is sent to the headlight from the xenon control unit due to a temporary
excessively low voltage in the vehicle circuitry.

This cause only applies when the headlights are switched on, not in the event of xenon
headlight failure during operation.

Affected vehicles:

E38 with xenon lights (option 522) 
Manufacturing period: September 1998 to October 1999

E39 with xenon lights (option 522) 
Manufacturing period: October 1998 to October 1999

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, the light check module (LCM) must be encoded with DIS CD
version 20.0 or later.

If this does not bring about an effect remedy, the xenon control unit must be replaced. In
such cases, proceed as per Repair Instructions "Replacing control unit for left xenon
headlight" / "Replacing control unit for right xenon headlight":

Exchanging the xenon headlight or the light check module will not produce the desired
results.
