Magnetic roof rack
E38, E39 with option 609
Situation:
- Please also pass on to the sales personnel -
Magnetic roof racks and magnetic aerials are offered on the market which can seriously
impair the magnetic field probe, and thus the function of the entire navigation system.
Even magnetic guide-number cones mounted outside on the roof in the Service
Department cause permanent functional defects.
Effect:
Frequent positioning errors and frequently displayed direction errors in the navigation
system are the result.
The magnetic influence may be so great that a calibration of the magnetic field probe is no
longer possible. Even replacing the magnetic field probe does not solve the problem.
Affected
vehicles:
E38, E39 with option navigation system (option 609)
Manufacturing period: Start of series production to approx. Sept. 97
Procedure:
It must be pointed out to the customer that:
-
no magnetic objects may be mounted on the roof (e.g. roof racks or magnetic aerials)
on vehicles equipped with a navigation system.
-
no magnetic or iron objects (e.g. umbrella) may be laid on the rear shelf.
In the Service Dept. it must be pointed out that:
-
no magnetic guide-number cones may be mounted on the vehicle roof, particularly not
on the E39 touring.
-
electric screwdrivers or magnetic tools may not be used in the area of the magnetic
field probe.
-
no additional loudspeakers may be installed in the area of the magnetic field probe.
Note:
If it is not possible to calibrate the magnetic field probe in the Service Dept., please
contact your dealer support.
