Lack of power or engine not starting

E46 , E65, E60, E61, E53, E83  /  M47TU, M57TU

Situation:

The first generation high-pressure pump ("CP 1") on the M47TU and M57TU engines has
been replaced by a new high-pressure pump known as the "CP 3.2".

Since the introduction of Common Rail technology, procedures have been developed with
regard to diagnostics on individual components that could produce incorrect analyses due
to the differences in technology in the new high-pressure pump "CP 3.2" (for technical
differences between high-pressure pumps: please refer to Enclosure 1).

If the engine does not start, the  high-pressure system can be diagnosed via DISplus or
GT1:

=>Function selection

=>Complete vehicle

=>Drive

=>Engine management DDE 5.0

=>Rail-pressure control, system test

If all other reasons for the engine not starting can be ruled out (e.g. troubleshooting on fuel
low-pressure system completed), the problem could be insufficient fuel pressure in the
high-pressure system.

Perform troubleshooting in the sequence given on the following components:

1. 

Injectors

2. 

High-pressure pump

3. 

Pressure control valve

Procedure: 

In the event of a customer complaint (engine not starting) the following checks should be
carried out on the high-pressure fuel system:

1. Checking injectors

The injectors must be checked in accordance with the procedure in Technical Campaigns
00 13 41 01 00 and 00 13 38 01 00.

Important.

On vehicles not affected by the above Technical Campaigns, if one injector fails
the test, the entire set of injectors must not be replaced.

2. Checking the high-pressure pump (CP3.2)

Check the high-pressure pump as described in repair instructions 13 51 542 "Checking the
high-pressure pump (M47TU/M57TU)".

Important.

The DDE software has been written so that it is not possible to start the engine if
no air is flowing through the air mass meter, i.e. if there is no signal from the air
mass meter.

For this reason, it is extremely important that the connector is unplugged from
the air mass meter before removing the intake system and for the subsequent
