Fault code 4F53 (converter clutch is faulty)

E65, E66  / GA6HP26/32Z (6HP26/32)

Complaints:

Vehicle jolts/shakes when driving with a light load or when coasting. The fault code 4F53
(opening/closing of the converter lockup clutch is faulty) is stored in the transmission fault
code memory.

Cause:

Converter clutch faulty.

Affected vehicles:

E65/E66 with M57, N62 and N73 engine 
Production period: Start of series production to January 2003 or up to transmission serial
number 124057.

E65 with M67 engine 
Production period: Start of series production to November 2002 or up to transmission serial
number 1112

Procedure:

In the event of a customer complaint, read off the fault code memory from the transmission
control unit.

If fault code 4F53 (opening/closing of converter lockup clutch faulty) is stored in the fault
memory code, replace the torque converter in accordance with Repair
Instructions 24 40 010

. Top up the oil with new transmission fluid. 

Note:
The special lifetime oil "Shell M-1375.4" is available in a 20 litre container under part
number 83 22 0 142 516.
