Poor quality gear change, especially the 2-3 shift

X5 M54 with A5R390R (GM5)

Complaint:

Poor quality gear change during warm-up phase and / or hard 2rd-3rd gear upshift when
load is relieved.

Cause:

Tuning.

Affected vehicles:

X5 M54 with A5R390R (GM5) with part number of programmed transmission control unit 7
508 382 or 7 509 348.

Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to and including 07/00.

Remedy:

An optimised data status has been installed in series production since week 31/00.

In order to rectify complaints within the dealer organisation, an Update CD for DIS CD
V23.0 has been compiled and will be available from September 2000.

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, read out the transmission control unit fault memory and
identify the part number of the programmed control unit.

If the control unit installed has part number 7 508 382 or 7 509 348 (programmed control
unit), the optimised data status must be programmed as follows:

"1. Load the DIS Update CD for CD V23.0" on the DIS/MoDiC. Information on the
installation of the Update CD can be found in the Information Diagnosis and Encoding
(IDC) bulletin "DIS Update" (004/00-5)

When the Update CD has been correctly installed, the version number of the application is
"Programming Drive Train P23.1".

It is only necessary to load the Update CD once.

When this has been done, programme the transmission control unit with the optimised
data. The optimised data status can be recognised by the part number of the programmed
control unit 7 510 134.

Note: the following DIS CD versions contain the optimised data status.

Reimbursement:

Material and labour costs incurred can be claimed through the usual warranty channels
subject to current warranty terms as follows:

This defect code is not listed in the official Defect
Code Catalogue but it has been recorded in the
system.
