Steering gear leak

E53

Complaint:

Oil level in oil reservoir of steering gear too low, resulting in disturbing pump noise from the
power steering pump. 

Cause:

Oil leaking from rod seal in power steering gear. The escaping oil collects in the flexible
gaiter which is not visible from the outside. 

Affected
vehicles:

E53 vehicles with production date: from series launch to June 2002

Procedure:

1. In the case of customer complaint, release the hose clip holding the gaiter as described
in RA 32 11 ... . 

2. If oil has collected in the interior of the gaiter, replace the power steering gear as
described in RA 32 13 061.
