Fuel gauge reading wrong

E53 / M54, M62

Complaint:

- 

After filling the fuel tank, the fuel gauge reading does not move to "FULL"

- 

After turning ignition OFF/ON, the correct level is occasionally displayed again

- 

In the electronic instrument cluster (IKE), 
fault 8 "fuel level sensor 1 (fuel pump side)" and/or 
fault 9 "fuel level sensor 2 (no fuel pump)" are recorded.

Cause:

Formation of deposit on the fuel level sensor conductor.

Affected
vehicles:

E53, M54/M62

Manufacturing period: start of series production until August 2000

Remedy:

In case of complaint, the right-hand delivery unit and the left-hand fuel level sensor must be
replaced.

Procedure:

1. 

Plug in the diagnostic connector and switch on terminal 15

2. 

Call up the diagnostic program

3. 

Select "Instrument cluster (IKE High)" via function selection

4. 

Call up test program via "Test plan" 

5. 

Read out fault memory

For Germany and USA only:

5.1 Select "3 Service functions" in test program

5.2 Select "1 Test code"

5.3 Store test code

5.4 Print diagnosis report

6. 

Replace right-hand delivery unit and left-hand fuel level sensor. 

Please refer to Repair Instructions 16 12 000 and

Repair Instructions 16 12 001

Important!

Repair instructions have been modified!

7. 

Clear the fault memory.
