Troubleshooting - steering acoustics

Clicking/grating from
steering column

When stationary without
engine running, apply
different torques to
steering wheel in both
directions

Steering column to
steering spindle centre
section connection not
tight enough

Retighten steering column to
steering spindle centre section
clamping screw to 32 Nm + 90

°

Knocking during
alternating steering

When stationary
with/without engine
running

Insufficient greasing of
thrust member

Regrease back of rack and thrust
member in power steering gear.

Hydraulic rattling

Drive at approx. 20 to 30
km/h with wheels not
entirely turned over cleat

Air in steering return

Check operational status of return
line; if necessary, replace return
line with a current version.

Muffled noise at end
stop

When stationary with
engine running, steer to
end stop with different
levels of force

Tolerance phenomenon of
pressure relief valve in
pump

Replace power steering pump if
pump status is worse than
estimation index 6.

Turn-in hissing

When steering from
centre position when
stationary

Presumably tolerances at
valve control edges

Heat steering system and allow
gas to escape overnight. Further
remedies are currently not
examined.

Leak valve hissing
at end stop

At end stop (both sides)

Tolerances in leak valve of
active front steering power
steering gear

Replace power steering gear if
steering gear status is worse than
BI 6.

Scraping at active
front steering power
steering gear

3-point turn

Manufacturing tolerances
in active front steering
power steering gear
(between actuator and
worm gear)

Replace power steering gear if
steering gear status is worse than
BI 6. The limit sound curve is
currently being determined.

Pump whining -
Dynamic Drive

Engine revving when
stationary

Transmission of structure-
borne noise to Dynamic
Drive power steering pump
to pressure lines

Check holder concept of pressure
lines for current status and correct
installation, modify if necessary.
If then not OK: Replace power
steering pump.

Restrictor whistling
(N62 and N52 with
Dynamic Drive)

Whistling irrespective of
speed with fluid at normal
operating temperature
when stationary
Alternating steering
briefly eliminates the
nose

Sharp-edged restrictor in
return

Replace return line.

Rattling

Parking when stationary
with service brake
pressed to low coefficient
of friction

Undamped vibration in
steering system

Check holder concept of pressure
and return lines for current status
and correct installation, modify if
necessary.
If then not OK: Replace power
steering gear.
