Misfiring

Situation:
In the course of quality observations, it has been determined that ignition coils have
frequently been replaced when the fault memory entry "misfiring" is present.
The fault memory entry "misfiring" and the associated cylinder allocation is not an
unambiguous identification of a defective ignition coil.
Effect:
The ignition coils submitted to the supplier for damaged part analysis are nearly all free of
faults and diagnosed NFF.
(NFF = No fault found).
Through process optimisation at the ignition coil suppliers it has been ensured that in most
cases, no exchange of ignition coils will be needed due to the fault memory entry
"misfiring".

Action:
To optimise future repairs in this field, a new test module for fault memory entry "misfiring"
will be stored in the BMW Group Tester from September 2006 (DIS-DVD 47).
Procedure:
Use the test module with the new testing schedule for the fault memory entry "misfiring"
described above.
Using this test module a condition for warranty reimbursement.
Material and labour costs incurred can be claimed through the usual warranty channels
subject to current warranty terms.
Work performed in this context that does not require the replacement of parts but rather
merely the clearing of the fault memory or testing as per the test module should be
reimbursed under a corresponding symptom diagnosis.
