Grating noises when brake pedal is depressed
E85 right-hand drive
Complaints:
When the brake pedal is depressed, unpleasant grating noises may come from the area of
the dashboard.
Cause:
On affected vehicles, a faulty weld may cause one or two welding points on the upper brake
pedal bracket to come loose.
Affected vehicles:
E85 right-hand drive
Manufacturing period: April 2003 to May 2003.
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, rework the upper brake pedal bracket.
To do this, proceed as follows:
1.
Remove the cowl panel cover, please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and
installing / replacing cowl panel cover", RA 51 13 115.
2.
Drill out the two weld points on the right in the direction of travel (please refer to item 1
in illustration) to 5.5 mm. Both drillings are accessible with a corner drilling machine
without having to remove the wiper system.
Do not rework the two weld points at item 2.
3.
Remove the instrument cluster, please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and
installing (replacing) instrument cluster",
RA 62 11 280. Do not disconnect the instrument cluster.
4.
Remove the cover from the pedal assembly, please refer to Repair Instructions
"Removing and installing / replacing cover for pedal assembly", RA 51 45 185.
5.
Insert the two screws from the inside of the vehicle. The upper screw fastening point is
accessible through the instrument cluster opening, the lower screw fastening point is
accessible from the footwell. Suggested tools for fitting screws: Join together 2
extensions, 1/4 inch with length 300 mm.
6.
Fit the hexagon nut from the outside and tighten with a torque of 5.0 Nm. A second
mechanic is needed to do this.
