Wind noises from the hardtop
E85
Complaint:
Wind noises between windscreen and hardtop.
Cause:
The convertible top causes a permanent deformation in the cowl panel seal in the shaped
section above the windscreen. This causes the contact area of the hardtop on the cowl
panel seal to be reduced over a length of approx. 200 mm on the left and right-hand sides.
A gap is created between the cowl panel seal and the hardtop, resulting in wind noise.

Manufacturing period: from start of series production until August 2004
Remedy:
In case of customer complaint, a filler piece is installed on the left and right under the
sealing lip.
Important:
Only if fitting the filler pieces does not eliminate the wind noise on individual vehicle
is it necessary to remove the shims in the hardtop caches and to readjust the
hardtop.
Procedure:
Install filler pieces under the sealing lip as described in Enclosure 1 .
If necessary, remove the shims from the hardtop catches as described in Enclosure 2 and
readjust the hardtop.
