Sequential manual transmission SMG, based on GS6-37BZ
E85
Introduction
The idea of the sequential manual transmission SMG has its origins in motor racing and has since been implemented
in series production.
In detail, SMG means that in contrast to a conventional manual transmission, the clutch control and gear change are
automated. An electro-hydraulic control system assumes the functions that the driver would usually perform with the
clutch pedal, shift lever and accelerator pedal.
The SMG allows
-
sequential manual gear change = manual mode
Gears are selected in sequence (sequentially) by briefly pressing "+/-". Gears can be skipped by rapidly pressing
the button repeatedly.
Gear changes can be made at
•
the gear lever in the center console, or
•
the 2 gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
Gears can be selected manually at any speed and at any accelerator pedal position.
The shift pulse is transmitted electrically to the SMG control unit. With this gearshift method, known as "shift-by-
wire" there is no mechanical linkage between the gear lever / gearshift paddles and the transmission.
-
Automatic mode = Drive mode
In automatic mode, the gearshifts are automatically controlled according to characteristic curves and are
