If it is necessary to install a new camshaft gear, the camshaft will have to be removed as the gear is a pressed fit on the camshaft. The camshaft is held
in place by a thrust plate which is retained to the engine by two capscrews which are accessible through the two holes in the gear web.
To remove gear, use an arbor press and a suitable sleeve to properly support gear on its steel hub.
Before installing gear, assemble thrust plate and gear spacer ring, then press gear onto shaft until it bottoms against spacer ring. The thrust plate end
clearance should be .0015-.0050 inch. If clearance is less than .0015 inch, the spacer ring should be replaced. If clearance is greater than .0050 inch, the
thrust plate should be replaced.
The crankshaft gear can be removed using a puller and two bolts in the tapped holes of the gear.
When installing timing gears, make sure that the marks on the gears are properly aligned, Fig. 7. The valve timing marks do not indicate TDC,
compression stroke for Number 1 cylinder.
