Alternator: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

BATTERY NOT CHARGING

1.

Cable between terminals broken or connector defective.

2.

Charging system not properly grounded.

3.

Brushes not in contact with slip ring.

4.

Stator coils open or burned. Measure resistance across terminals at connectors between diode cover and stator coil leads.

5.

Rotor coil open or burned. Measure resistance across F and E with connector at alternator disconnected.

6.

Diodes defective. Make continuity test across B-N, B-E and N-E.

7.

IC regulator defective.

BATTERY UNDER CHARGING

1.

Wires between terminals poorly connected.

2.

Drive belt slipping.

3.

Brushes in poor contact with slip ring.

4.

Rotor coil layers shorted.

5.

Stator coils open or shorted.

6.

Diodes defective.

7.

Regulated voltage adjusted too low.

8.

Electrical load excessive.

BATTERY OVER CHARGING

1.

Short circuit between B terminal and F terminal.

2.

IC regulated voltage too high.
