Water In Fuel Indicator: Description and Operation
These vehicles have a "Water in Fuel" light mounted in the instrument panel. The ``Water in Fuel'' light has a bulb check feature and should light
for 2 to 2-1/2 seconds when the ignition is turned on. If not, the bulb is burned out or there is an open in the wiring circuit. When there is water in
the fuel, the light will come back on and remain on after a 15 to 20 second delay.
A water sensing probe, mounted on the fuel sender, actuates the instrument panel light when it is partially covered with water. About 1 to 2-1/2
gallons of water must be present in the fuel tank to cause the sensor light to activate.
If the ``Water in Fuel'' lamp goes on while the vehicle is being driven, the fuel system should be checked for water. If the lamp goes on
immediately after refueling and before the vehicle is moved, there is a large quantity of water in the tank and should be removed immediately.
The water may be removed from the tank with a pump or by siphoning. The pump or siphon hose should be connected to the quarter inch fuel
return hose (the smaller of the two hoses), located under the hood near the fuel pump. Refer to ``Purging Water From Fuel Tank'' procedure.
