SUBJECT:
THEFT DETERRENT ALARMS INTERMITTENTLY OR A DISCHARGED BATTERY CONDITION
MODELS AFFECTED: 1989 ELECTRA
Some 1989 Electra/Park Avenues may exhibit a condition of false theft alarm or discharged battery condition. The condition may appear worse in humid
weather and may begin to occur after door adjustments have been performed.
This condition may be caused by a misadjusted door jamb switch. If misadjusted, the jamb switch theft contacts can short together in high humidity or as
the body settles. (The theft contacts can short without turning on the interior lamp because the interior lamp contacts require a fully-closed switch.) If the
theft system is armed when the contacts short, the result will be a false theft alarm. If the theft system is not armed, the security telltale could flash
causing a discharged battery.
To diagnose the condition, try closing each of the four doors several times while watching the security indicator. If the security indicator continues to
flash with a closed door, the jamb switch on that door is misadjusted.
To repair the condition, remove the switch and install one washer, Part Number 22521054, between each jamb switch and the door jamb surface on all
doors. The washer is a 3 mm thick flat spacer washer with a corrosion resistant coating. Four-door vehicles built after VIN 219497 have a washer
installed on each switch.
Parts are currently available from GSMPO.
