Multi-Function Switch Lever - Rattling Noise

SUBJECT:

RATTLE TYPE NOISE ORIGINATING FROM MULTI-FUNCTION TURN SIGNAL LEVER

MODELS AFFECTED: ALL 1983-87 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH MULTI-FUNCTION TURN SIGNAL LEVERS:

CENTURY, LESABRE, ELECTRA/PARK AVENUE, RIVIERA, REGAL, AND SKYLARK

A rattle condition on any of the above vehicles may be caused by excess looseness or play in the windshield washer actuator paddle. This condition can
be repaired by installing a foam rubber "donut" on the lever using the following procedure:

1.

Make sure the lever is in the center or "off" position (turn signal not on).

2.

Make sure that the windshield wiper switch is set to the "off" position. This must be done to prevent damage to the windshield wiper switch.

3.

Pull the lever straight out from the column, using care not to pull any excess amount of wire from the column on cars equipped with cruise control.

4.

Check the inner end of the lever for presence of a previously installed foam "donut" which may have been misinstalled during assembly.

5.

If a "donut" is present, and it is not damaged, it can be reinstalled. If the "donut" is damaged or missing, a new part can be obtained through
GMSPO:

Install the foam "donut" to the turn signal lever as shown on the illustration, making sure that the "donut" is positioned over the two (2) protrusions
at the end of the windshield washer paddle and flush against the shoulder of the paddle. NOTICE: The "donut" has a glossy appearance at one end.
It may be easier to install the "donut" with the glossy end AWAY from the shoulder of the paddle.

7.

Reassemble the turn signal lever assembly to the steering column by pushing it back into the turn signal switch. Check the lever for proper function
of all switches.
