Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
Brake Shoes Replace
Rear Brake Components
SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED (or equivalents)

J-8049, Brake spring remover and installer.
^
J-8057, Brake spring pliers.
^
J-21177-A, Drum to brake shoe gage.
^
J-29840, Brake spring remover and installer.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
2. Tire and wheel assembly.
3. Brake drum. If difficulty is encountered in removing drum the following steps may be of assistance:

Make sure parking brake is released.

Back off parking brake cable adjustment.

Remove adjusting hole knockout plate from brake drum and back off adjusting screw using screw driver and adjusting tool.

Use a rubber mallet to tap gently on outer rim of the drum and/or around inner drum diameter by spindle. Take care not to deform the drum by
use of excessive force.
NOTE: On some drum designs the knockout plate must be drilled out. Use an 11 mm (7/16 in.) drill. After adjustment, install rubber adjusting
hole cover GM PN 5464803 or equivalent into adjusting hole to prevent dirt or contamination from entering drum brake assembly.
4. Return springs using J-8049 or J-29840 pliers.
5. Hold-down springs and pins using suitable pliers.
6. Lever pivot.
7. Actuator link while lifting up on actuator lever.
8. Actuator lever and lever return spring.
9. Parking brake strut and strut spring.
10. Shoe and lining assemblies after disconnecting parking brake cable.
11. Adjusting screw assembly and spring.
12. Retaining ring, pin and parking brake lever from secondary shoe.
