Handling and Measuring Procedures
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE (ESD) SENSITIVE DEVICES
All ESD sensitive components contain solid state circuits. The following information applies to all ESD sensitive devices.
Handling Procedures
When handling an electronic part that is ESD sensitive, the service technician should follow these guidelines to reduce any possible electrostatic
charge build-up on the service technician's body and the electronic part in the shop:
^ Always touch a known good ground before handling the part. This should be repeated while handling the part and more frequently after sliding
across the seat, sitting down from a standing position, or walking a distance.
^ Avoid touching electrical terminals of the part, unless so instructed by a written diagnostic procedure.
^ Do not open package of a new part until it is time to install the part.
^ Before removing the part from its package, ground the package to a known good ground on the car.
Measuring Procedures
^ Solid state circuits in electronic devices are shown greatly simplified.
^ Due to the simplification of the electronic devices on the schematics, resistance measurements could be misleading or could lead to electrostatic
discharge.
^ Only measure the resistance at the terminals of these devices when instructed by a written diagnostic procedure.
^ When using a voltmeter, be sure to connect the ground lead first.
