Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

1.
Remove flexplate and confirm rear seal leak.
2.
Insert a screwdriver through oil seal dust lip and pry seal out towards end of crankshaft pilot.
3.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check inside of bore and crankshaft for nicks or burrs. Repair or replace as required.
b. Apply engine oil to inside and outside surfaces of the new seal, then slide seal over seal installation tool No. J38196 or equivalent as shown in
Fig. 20, until seal bottoms squarely against bottom of tool.
c. Align dowel pin of tool with dowel pin in crankshaft and attach tool to crankshaft by hand and tighten attaching screws to 60 inch lbs, Fig. 21.
d. Turn T-handle of tool so that collar pushes seal into bore, turn handle until collar is tight against case.
e. Loosen T-handle, remove attaching screws and the tool.
