SUBJECT:
ENGINE OIL LIFE MONITOR (OPERATION AND DIAGNOSIS)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-93 PARK AVENUE, PARK AVENUE ULTRA AND 1992-93 LESABRE WITH ENGINE OIL LIFE MONITOR
CONDITION:
a.
The "Change Oil Soon" telltale stays on for approximately 60 seconds after turning the key to the run position and then goes out.
b.
The "Change Oil Soon" telltale stays on for the entire time the key is in the run position.
CAUSE:
a.
The Engine Oil Life Monitor has determined that the oil life is more than 90 percent spent and the oil should be changed soon, i.e., the oil life
index is less than 10 percent.
b.
The Engine Oil Life Monitor has registered a problem with either the vehicle system or the module itself. A diagnostic code has been set.
CORRECTION:
a.
The engine oil should be changed and then the Engine Oil Life Monitor should be reset. This is accomplished by putting the key into the run
position and pressing the reset button for more than five seconds but less than 60 seconds. The reset button can be accessed through the hole in the
hush panel. The engine should not be running. (Note: The Engine Oil Life Monitor has no way of knowing that the oil has been changed without
being reset).
b.
The codes should be read off the Engine Oil Life Monitor by using a Tech 1 or similar diagnostic tool. The service manual should then be
referenced to determine the appropriate action for each diagnostic code.
