Shift Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
Transaxle Pre-Functional Check
Transaxle Solenoid & Driver Circuits
Before using the Transaxle Test Box J-38791 as described in the functional checks, the following procedure should be performed to ensure proper
diagnosis and avoid unnecessary replacement of good parts.
1.
Check for stored PCM diagnostic trouble codes. See: Heating and Air Conditioning/Testing and Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic
Trouble Codes/Displaying & Reading Trouble Codes If codes are present, refer to applicable Diagnostic Trouble Code Charts and repair those
conditions first. Refer to Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Diagnostic Charts.

Connect Transaxle Test Box J-38791.
a. Disconnect transaxle wiring harness from transaxle.
b. Connect test box connectors to transaxle and wiring harness.
c. Route test box harness under the rear of the hood and through the drivers window, making sure harness cannot touch exhaust manifold and is
clear of other obstructions that may damage harness.
d. With test box "GEAR SELECTOR", select "NORMAL".
e. Insert test box ground connector into cigarette lighter receptacle.
3.
Observe indicator lights on the test box with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. Note the following:

"BATTERY", "IGN", "BRAKE", "SHIFT A", and "SHIFT B" lights should be "ON". Converter clutch "APPLY" and "MOD" indicators
should be "OFF". (Disregard "LO DISCREET", "2-3" and "3-4" indicator lights.)

If indicator lights do not function as described, check all connections. If connections are good and indicators still do not function properly, find
symptoms being experienced and repair as indicated (see below.)

No lights "ON" or "IGN" light only "ON":
Check connection at cigarette lighter receptacle. If OK, fuse for cigarette lighter or receptacle is faulty.

"BATTERY" light "ON", all others "OFF":
Check 10 amp cooling fan fuse and repair short to ground in circuit 250 if blown. If OK, check for an open in circuit 250 or circuit 3
(ignition power to fuse block.)

"IGN" light not "ON":
Check for an open in circuit 250 to transaxle harness connector terminal "E".

"BRAKE" light not "ON":

Charts.

"SHIFT A" and/or "SHIFT B" light(s) not "ON":
Use chart C-8B.

Converter clutch "APPLY" light "ON" all the time:
Disconnect PCM green connector and check circuit 422 for a short to ground. If OK, PCM is faulty.

Converter clutch "MOD" light "ON" all the time:
Disconnect PCM green connector and check circuit 1350 for short to ground. If OK, PCM is faulty.
4.
Proceed with functional check.
