Brake Fluid Pump: Testing and Inspection
Only perform this procedure if pump runs for more than 60 seconds. Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with painted surfaces.
1.
Turn ignition switch to the Off position, then depressurize Powermaster III unit.
2.
Loosen, but do not remove tube nuts from both front master cylinder chambers.
3.
Apply brake pedal as far as possible. Check that brake fluid runs from around tube nuts.
4.
With pedal still applied, tighten tube nuts.
5.
Quickly release brake pedal, then reapply with a sharp, rapid motion with full force.
6.
Remove reservoir cover and diaphragm assembly, then check fluid level in reservoirs. Use clean DOT 3 fluid to fill if necessary.
7.
Snap reservoir cover onto reservoir, then turn ignition switch to the On position. Allow pump to run.
8.
Turn ignition switch to the Off position if pump runs longer than 60 seconds, inspect pump for malfunction.
9.
Apply brake pedal and note travel and feel. If pedal feels firm and smooth, without excessive travel, system is properly bled.
10.
If pedal feels soft, spongy, or has excessive travel, refer to EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL.
11.
If a bump is noted upon initial pedal apply, or pedal apply does not feel smooth and uniform, refer to NON-UNIFORM PEDAL APPLY.
12.
Road test vehicle. If any of the above symptoms appear, refer to appropriate procedure.
