Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair
Manual Bleeding
1.
Turn ignition switch to the Off position, then depressurize Powermaster III unit.
2.
Clean reservoir and diaphragm assembly, then remove reservoir cover assembly.
3.
Fill reservoir to proper level with DOT 3 brake fluid, then reinstall cover assembly.
4.
Raise and support vehicle, then attach a clear bleeder hose to right front bleeder valve and submerge opposite end in clean container partially filled
with brake fluid.
5.
Open bleeder valve, then slowly depress bleeder valve. To aid in releasing trapped air, lightly tap on caliper castings with a rubber mallet.
6.
Close bleeder valve, then release brake valve.
7.
Check, then add brake fluid if necessary.
8.
Repeat steps 4-7 until pedal feels firm and no air is observed bleeder hose.
9.
Repeat steps 4-8 for left front brake.
10.
Turn ignition switch to the On position, allowing pump to run. If pump runs longer than 60 seconds, inspect pump for malfunctions.
11.
Attach clear bleeder hose to right rear bleeder valve and submerge opposite end in a clean container partially filled with brake fluid.
12.
Turn ignition switch to the On position, open bleeder valve, then slowly depress brake pedal part-way, until fluid begins to flow from hose. Do not
depress brake pedal fully.
13.
Hold pedal for 15 seconds. To aid in freeing entrapped air, tap lightly on caliper casting with a rubber mallet.
14.
Close bleeder valve, then release brake pedal.
15.
Repeat steps 12-14, until no air is observed in the fluid.
16.
Turn ignition switch to the Off position, depressurize Powermaster III unit, then check brake fluid. Add fluid as needed.
17.
Repeat steps 10-16 for left rear wheel.
18.
Repeat steps 10-16 for inboard bleeder valve of Powermaster III unit.
19.
Repeat steps 10-16 for outboard bleeder valve of Powermaster III unit.
20.
Turn ignition switch to the Off position, then depressurize Powermaster III unit. Check brake fluid level and fill as needed.
21.
Apply moderate to heavy force on brake pedal.
22.
With pedal applied, turn ignition switch to the On position for 5 seconds, then turn ignition switch to the Off position. Repeat this step 10 times.
Do not turn ignition switch to the Start position, or start motor.
23.
Depressurize Powermaster III unit, then wait two minutes for air to clear from within reservoir.
24.
Attach bleeder hose to bleeder valve on inboard side of Powermaster III unit and submerge opposite end in clean container partially filled with
brake fluid.
25.
Turn ignition switch to the On position, then apply light force to brake pedal.
26.
With pedal applied, slowly open bleeder valve and allow fluid to flow until no air is seen in fluid.
27.
Close valve when no air is seen in fluid.
28.
Repeat steps 24-27, for outboard bleeder valve.
29.
Turn ignition switch to the Off position, then depressurize Powermaster III unit.
30.
Remove reservoir cover and diaphragm assembly, check and fill reservoirs with DOT 3 brake fluid as needed.
31.
Install reservoir cover, then turn ignition switch to the On position. Allow pump to run. If pump runs for longer than 60 seconds, inspect pump for
malfunctions.
32.
Apply brake pedal, noting feel and travel.
33.
If pedal feels firm and smooth, without excessive travel, system is properly bled.
34.
If pedal feels soft, spongy, or has excessive travel, refer to EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL.
35.
If a bump is noted upon initial pedal apply, or pedal apply does not feel smooth and uniform, refer to NON-UNIFORM PEDAL APPLY.
36.
Road test vehicle. If any of the above symptoms appear, refer to appropriate procedure.
