Fuel Gauge Sender: Service and Repair

Fuel Tank Mounting

WARNING:  To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from
which components are being removed.  This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off the hoist.

FUEL TANK REMOVAL:

1.

Remove all fuel from tank, see MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/DRAINING FUEL TANK.

2.

Remove the fuel filler door assembly.

3.

Disconnect the fuel filler to body retaining bracket.

4.

Raise the vehicle.

5.

Disconnect the fuel tank sender unit electrical connector.

6.

Support the fuel tank and disconnect the fuel tank retaining straps.

7.

Lower the fuel tank enough to disconnect the ground lead, if equipped.

8.

Remove the ground lead retaining screw from the under body.

9.

Remove the hoses from the tank sender unit.

10.

Remove the tank from the vehicle.

11.

Remove the sending unit retainer cam, using tool J 24187 or equivalent.

12.

Remove the sending unit from the tank.

INSTALLATION:

1.

Install the fuel sending unit using a new gasket.

NOTE:  Care should be taken not to fold over or twist the fuel strainer when installing the sending unit, as this will restrict the fuel flow.  Also,
make sure that the fuel strainer does not block full travel of the float arm.

2.

Reinstall insulator pads on top of the fuel tank to reduce rattle and other annoying noises.  If using new pads, peel off the release paper on the rear
insulators, and apply them to the fuel tank.  Apply tape to the front insulator, using one 330 mm or two 130 mm pieces of tape.

3.

Raise the tank enough to connect the fuel hoses to the tank sending unit.

4.

Connect the fuel tank sending unit electrical connector.

5.

Attach the fuel tank retaining straps and tighten the front bolts to 35 Nm (26 lb.ft).  Tighten the rear strap bolts to 11 Nm (8 lb.ft).

6.

Lower the vehicle.

7.

Install the fuel filler pipe to body bracket bolt, and tighten.

8.

Install the fuel filler door assembly.

9.

Fill the tank with fuel and check for leaks.
