Valve Guide: Service and Repair

    The valve guides are an integral part of the cylinder head and cannot be replaced.
    If valve stem clearance is excessive, the valve guide must be reamed and an oversize valve installed. Valves are available in the oversize of .010 inch.
    Abnormal oil consumption or detonation on some 1982 V6-252 engines may be caused by intake valve seals that have lifted off the valve
guide. To correct this condition, a smaller replacement seal, Part No. 25516279, should be installed onto valve guide. Since valve guide outside
diameter must be reduced from .605 to .552 to accept the new seal, it will be necessary to rework the valve guides prior to seal installation.
Using valve guide cutting tool KL1440, or equivalent, perform the following operation.

1.

Remove cylinder head as outlined in ``Cylinder Head, Replace'' procedure.

2.

Remove all intake and exhaust valves from cylinder head to prevent metal chips from lodging in exhaust guide mechanism.

3.

Insert cutting tool into chuck of low speed drill, oil tool pilot, then insert pilot into intake valve guide.

4.

Applying steady pressure to cutting tool, machine valve guide until small cutter block in tool has cut chamfer on top of valve guide.

5.

Thoroughly clean cylinder head and guides, then remove any burrs from valve stem and guides with a fine stone.

6.

Oil valves and install them into guides.

7.

Install new seals onto valve guides, then reassemble cylinder head assembly.

8.

Install cylinder head.
