Propeller Shaft Balance

    A wheel balancer of the type equipped with a strobe light can be used to facilitate balancing of the driveshaft. The pickup unit should be placed
directly under the nose of the rear axle carrier and as far forward as possible.

1.

Place car on twin post lift so rear of car is supported on the rear axle housing and rear wheels are free to rotate.

2.

Remove both rear wheels and tire assemblies and reinstall wheel lug nuts with flat side next to drum.

3.

Mark and number driveshaft at four points 90° apart at rear of shaft just forward of balance weights.

4.

Place strobe light pickup under nose of differential.

5.

With car running in gear at car speed where unbalance is at its peak, allow driveline to stabilize by holding at constant speed. Point strobe light at
spinning shaft and note position of one of the reference marks.

6.

Shut off engine and position shaft so reference mark will be in position noted when car was running. Do not run car on hoist for extended
periods due to danger of overheating transmission or engine.

7.

When strobe light flashed, the heaviest point of the shaft was down. To balance shaft it will be necessary to apply weight 180° away. Screw type
hose clamps can be used as weights as shown in Fig. 4.
