Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair

    Design allows for axle shaft endplay of .025 inch on ``C'', ``G'', ``K'', ``O'' and ``P'' (7 1/2 inch) axles, and .032 inch on ``P'' (except 7 1/2 inch). These
axles may be identified by the third letter located on the right rear tube on the forward side. This endplay can be checked with the wheel and brake drum
removed by measuring the difference between the end of the housing and the axle shaft flange while moving the axle shaft in and out by hand.
    Endplay over this is excessive. Compensating for all the endplay by inserting a shim inboard of the bearing in the housing is not recommended since it
ignores the endplay of the bearing itself, and may result in improper seating of the gasket or backing plate against the housing. If endplay is excessive,
the axle shaft and bearing assembly should be removed and the cause of the excessive end play determined and corrected.

REMOVING AXLE SHAFT

1.

Remove wheels and brake drums.

2.

Remove bolts and differential cover and allow lubricant to drain.

3.

Remove pinion shaft lock bolt and pinion shaft then push axle shafts inward, remove C-lock and axle shaft.

REPLACING AXLE SHAFT BEARINGS & SEALS

1.

Using a suitable pry bar, remove seal from housing. Do not damage axle housing.

2.

Position tool No. J-23689 or equivalent behind bearing bore so tangs on tool engage bearing outer race, then using a suitable slide hammer
attached to tool No. J-23689, remove bearing.

3.

Using suitable gear lubricant, lubricate bearing. Then, using axle bearing installer J-23690 or equivalent, install bearing. Bearing is properly seated
when tool bottoms against housing shoulder.

4.

Lubricate seal with suitable gear lubricant, then using seal installer J-21128 or equivalent, tap seal into position until seal is flush with axle tube.

5.

Install axle.

AXLE SHAFT INSTALLATION

1.

Apply a coat of wheel bearing grease in wheel bearing and seal recess.

2.

Install axle shaft through seal and bearing and through side gear as far in as possible. Do not let shaft drag across seal lip, and always apply
grease between seal lips.

3.

Install C-lock and move axle shaft outward to bottom C-lock in recess of side gear.

4.

Install pinion shaft and torque lock bolt to 20 ft. lbs.

5.

Install gasket and cover and torque bolts to 30 ft. lbs. After 20 minutes, retorque bolts to 30 ft. lbs.

6.

Install correct type and amount of lubricant.

7.

Install brake drum and wheel.
