Riviera V6-231 3.8L Turbo VIN 8 4-bbl (1983)
REMOVAL
1.
Remove transmission assembly.
2.
Remove sprocket housing cover attaching bolts, then cover. Do not hit the cover to remove it. Use a suitable putty knife to break the case to
cover seal.
3.
Remove fourth gear clutch snap ring, Fig. 1.
4.
Remove fourth gear clutch plates, then turbine shaft snap ring, thrust washer, thrust bearing and overdrive unit, Fig. 2.
5.
Remove overdrive carrier to drive sprocket thrust bearing assembly.
6.
Remove bolts securing fourth gear clutch housing to case, then housing.
7.
Remove clutch housing to case O-ring.
8.
Remove sprocket bearing retaining snap rings from retaining grooves in support housings located under drive and driven sprockets, Fig. 3. Do not
attempt to remove snap rings from beneath sprockets. Leave snap rings in a loose position between sprockets and bearing assemblies.
9.
Remove drive and driven sprockets, link belt, bearings and turbine shaft simultaneously by alternately pulling upwards on driven support housing,
Fig. 4. If sprockets and link belt are difficult to remove, place a small piece of masonite or similar material between the sprockets and pry
bar. Alternately pry upward under each sprocket. Do not pry on chain links or aluminum case, Fig. 4.

Remove link belt from drive and driven sprockets.
INSTALLATION
1.
Place link belt around drive and driven sprockets so links engage teeth of sprockets and colored guide link which has etched numerals is facing
link cover.
2.
Simultaneously position link belt, drive and driven sprockets into support housing, Fig. 4.
3.
Install sprocket assembly to support housing snap rings.
4.
Install new O-ring in case, then position fourth gear clutch housing on case. Insert retaining bolts, then torque to 17 ft. lbs.
5.
Place overdrive carrier to drive support thrust bearing in position.
