Spark Plug Wire: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The spark plug wiring is an aramid fiber (or similar cord) conductor. The wires are encased in an 8 mm (5/16 in.) diameter silicone rubber jacket.
The silicone jacket is an excellent insulator for the high voltages used in the ignition system. The silicone spark plug boots provide a tight seal on the
spark plug. Do not force anything between the boot and wiring or through the silicone jacket. Connections should be made using an appropriate
adapter.
The spark plug wire boots contain FHC grease as a lubricant, which will last the entire life of the spark plug wires, which makes future FHC grease
application unnecessary. This coating is clear with a slightly waxy feel. The coating helps prevent the silicone spark plug boot from sticking to the
spark plug ceramic. This greatly reduces the effort required to remove and install the spark plug boot and spark plug wires. If silicone type lubricants
are added to FHC coated spark plug boot, carbon tracking of spark plugs may occur.
CAUTION: It is important that technicians wash their hands afier handling coated spark plugs and before smoking. The coating itself is a
non-hazardous material and incidental contact will not cause any adverse effects. However, exposure to polymer vapors - the result of contamination
of cigarette products and subsequent burning of the polymer - may result in flu-like symptoms and should be avoided.
