Roadmaster V8-305 5.0L (1992)
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Valve rocker cover.
2. Rocker arm nuts (35).
3. Rocker arm balls (36).
4. Rocker arms (37) and the pushrods (41). Place the rocker arms (37), rocker arm balls (36) and pushrods (41) in a rack so they can be re-installed
in the same locations from which they were removed.
INSPECT

Rocker arm studs for damaged threads. Replace studs if necessary.

Rocker arms (37) and balls (36) for wear or damage to their mating surfaces.
^
Rocker arm areas that contact valve stems and rocker arm sockets and pushrod ends. Check for scoring, roughness or other damage.
^
Pushrod (41) for bends. The rod is bent if it will not roll freely on a flat surface.
INSTALL OR CONNECT

When installing new rocker arms (37) or rocker arm balls (36), coat their bearing surfaces with prelube, GM part number 1052365 or its
equivalent. Install these components and the pushrods (41) in the locations from which they were removed.
1. Pushrods (41). Make sure the pushrods (41) seat in the lifter sockets.
2. Rocker arms (37).
3. Rocker arm balls (36).
4. Rocker arm adjusting nuts (35). Tighten nuts (35) until all lash is eliminated.
ADJUST

Crank the engine until the mark on the torsional damper lines up with center or "0" mark on the timing tab fastened to the crankcase front cover,
and the engine is in the number 1 firing position.

Place your fingers on the number 1 valves as the mark on the damper comes near the "0" mark. If the valves move as the mark comes up to the
timing tab, the engine is in the number 6 firing position and should be turned over one more time to reach the number 1 position.

With the engine in the number 1 firing position, the following valves may be adjusted:
-
Exhaust: 1, 3, 4, 8.
-
Intake: 1, 2, 5, 7.

Back out adjusting nut (35) until lash is felt at the pushrod (41). Then tighten adjusting nut (35) just until all lash is removed.

Lash removal can be determined by rotating the pushrod (41) while turning the adjusting nut (35).
^
When all play has been removed, turn adjusting nut (35) in: 1 and 1/4 additional turns.
^
Crank the engine one revolution until the pointer "0" mark and torsional damper mark are again in alignment. This is the number 6 firing position.
With the engine in this position, adjust the following valves as outlined below:
-
Exhaust: 2, 5, 6, 7.

Intake: 3, 4, 6, 8.
^
Install valve rocker cover.
^
Check minimum idle speed.
